In today’s highly digital environment, a common reporting language is perhaps one of the greatest needs of the business world. Once we admit that complex reports filled with unnecessary figures, colors and charts do not mean “sophistication”, it becomes even more clear that we need certain standards to streamline and simplify reporting, presentation and dashboard processes. This is exactly what IBCS Association had in mind while setting the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS®).
We had the opportunity to have a conversation with Dr. Jürgen Faisst, the Managing Director of IBCS Association, about these standards and how he feels about coming back to our country for the second IBCS with SUCCESS Seminar in Turkey. We hope you enjoy reading it. And let us remind you that we’re looking forward to seeing you at the Seminar to be held on September 25th at Sheraton Grand İstanbul Ataşehir.
Could you please give some information on the basics of IBCS®?
The International Business Communication Standards (IBCS®) are practical proposals for the proper conceptual, perceptual and semantic design of charts and tables in reports, presentations, and dashboards. The IBCS® Standards are free and open, available on www.ibcs-a.org/standards, published and further developed by the not-for-profit IBCS Association. In a nutshell, the IBCS® initiative strives to establish a generally accepted notation for business communication, similar to sheet music for musicians and circuit diagrams for electrical engineers.
What is the benefit of implementing the IBCS® Standards in a company?
Imagine if every composer from Mozart to Gershwin used a different notation system. How would musicians be able to interpret the music quickly? Yet in business, there is a plethora of ways to layout reports and dashboards, even within a single company. The IBCS® Standards are leading the way to faster, better, and less-costly results in all stages of the decision-making processes.
What is the purpose of IBCS® with SUCCESS seminars?
Although the benefits are obvious, most business people are not yet aware of the existence of the IBCS® initiative. In our IBCS® with SUCCESS seminars, we try to create awareness for potential improvements of reports, presentations, and dashboards by showing many practical examples before and after applying the SUCCESS formula of the IBCS® Standards. The acronym SUCCESS stands for an easy-to-remember formula of seven rule sets, covering 98 conceptual, perceptual, and semantic rules of the IBCS® Standards.
What is the benefit of these seminars for individuals?
Attending this seminar will help the participants significantly improve their reporting: Report creators will learn about a method leading to standardized, reusable report templates saving time and cost. Analysts will see what it needs to benefit from standardized reports and presentations that are much easier to understand because they deliver clearer information. Managers will get new ideas on how to add value to the overall decision-making process by applying the SUCCESS formula of IBCS®.
Could you please give some feedback on the previous seminar in Turkey?
While the IBCS® Standards are very popular in the German-speaking countries, we had not expected such a great interest in our first seminar in Turkey last year. IBSS Danışmanlık, our local partner did a great job in creating awareness and preparing the seminar. After the seminar, we got very positive feedback from the participants. Turkish managers seem to suffer from the same incomprehensible reports as managers in other parts of the world and they are grateful to learn about the SUCCESS formula of the IBCS® Standards for improving this situation.
What are your expectations for the 2nd seminar to be held on September 25th? Do you have any messages to participants?
I would be more than glad to see the same level of interest in IBCS® again. IBSS Danışmanlık and we from the IBCS® Institute are even better prepared than last year: There is a first local IBCS® Certified Consultant who can help Turkish companies implement the SUCCESS formula of IBCS®. She will also give some parts of the seminar. Also, there are more technical options for implementing IBCS® than we had one year ago, especially in the SAP BI stack. SAP will show one of them in a short presentation after lunch.
